How to Raise a Compassionate Child

It’s a basic human instinct to show kindness and help others in need. All children have the fundamental desire to be compassionate towards others but need a little guidance to show them how and help them along the way. We have teamed up with a nursery in Beaconsfield to share some guidance on raising a compassionate child.

Show Compassion Towards Them

The way that children are treated can have an impact on the way that they grow up and treat others. By showing them compassion when hurt and acknowledging their feelings, you can teach them how to treat others and do the same.

Teach them to Share

Sharing is caring and a selfless act to help others out. Teaching your child to part with the things that they no longer need can teach them to be compassionate and thoughtful. This is something that children often struggle with.

Eliminate Negative Influences

The people that you surround yourself with will inadvertently affect your child and the way that they are brought up. Negative influences and unkind people can teach children that bad behaviour is okay and acceptable as they look up to the elders around them. Similarly, making sure that your child has positive and compassionate role models can help them to grow to be the same.

How to Recognise When Someone’s Sad

Teaching your child how to recognise emotions can help them to identify when others are sad and be a better support to them. This is something that you can do by pointing out different emotions in real life situations, TV and character books.

Do Nice Things for Those Around You

By doing small acts of kindness for those around you, you can teach your child easy ways to show compassion to others. That might be listening to a friend’s worries or helping an elderly neighbour with their shopping.
