Teaching Your Child to Overcome Obstacles

This is a paid collaboration.

Obstacles are an inevitable part of life and children need to learn from an early age that there won’t always be someone to deal with them on their behalf. With that said, parents should try and equip their children with the necessary skills to overcome obstacles in a health manner. Here’s some advice from an independent school in Kensington.

  1. Set a Good Example

When trying to instil important life lessons in your children, it’s crucial that you lead by example. With that said, show them how rewarding it can be to overcome a challenging situation. Don’t procrastinate or show frustration when dealing with something difficult, because your child will think this is an appropriate way to deal with obstacles.

  1. Promote Positivity

Be your child’s biggest cheerleader and help motivate them, boost their self-esteem, and encourage them to persevere. Praise them when they deserve it and help them achieve their goals. Not only will this equip them with the necessary skills to tackle problems, it will also help instil the right attitude in them, as they’ll have faith in their abilities.

  1. Put Things Into Perspective

Help your child understand the fortunate position they are in by putting things into perspective. Perhaps you could volunteer together at a local care home or a charity so that your child is able to see how other people cope with obstacles. This should help them see that things aren’t always as difficult as they seem; there’s always someone out there with even bigger challenges.

  1. Communicate as a Family

Make sure your child knows that you are always there to support them and help them deal with challenging situations should they need you. To do so, you will need to create a family environment that values open communication, without judgement. If your child thinks you’ll judge them, they won’t open up to you, and unless they tell you what they’re going through you won’t be able to help.
