Respect is a skill that’s essential for a child’s development and something that demonstrates a child is aware of the core moral values. For parents, they should be aiming to develop their skills in earning respect, learning how to converse with others and know not to pass judgement. In this guide from a boys prep school we look at some ways you can raise a respectful child.
Model respect in the home
Having a respectful child comes from the habits and things they see at home. Parents should aim to model being honest, giving respect to their children and others they come in contact with. You can model a lot of respect in everyday life, like respecting waiters in a restaurant, thanking staff in a cafe or at the shops. These little acts of kindness teach a child the first stages of earning respect.

Teach kind responses to your child
Those pleases and thank yous don’t just come naturally. Encourage your child to use their manners when they’re talking to everyone they come in contact with. You’d be surprised how much they’ll be praised for their efforts and who they can impress with their respectful language.
Patience is key
Your child won’t fully understand the importance of respect straight away, which is why general reinforcement each week will remind them of how they can be respectful. Continue with the same methods each day and see how your child continues with their progress. The more opportunities for your child to practice their skills, the better they can memorise when and where to show respect.
Set limits
Having a series of limits to guide your child will show them not to take things for granted, and learning about how they can be appreciative of what they have. Having a good sense of what they can and can’t do will show your child that they can’t take advantage of every moment, and also showing them that respect can mean rewards.
