Exploring STEM Subjects with Your Child

STEM subjects are the biggest developments for children in the modern era. They will show your child how to build their awareness of how great science truly is, and will help them discover more about individual areas of science and technology.

It’s a good idea to get your child interested in the world of STEM subjects, especially when many prep schools will include it in their curriculum. This guide explores how you can help your child learn to enjoy the world of STEM.

Coding with LEGO

Using LEGO or building blocks within coding will show your child how their tech skills can be put to good use. You and your child could put together a maze, or a device that moves along with your own commands. This is the most important part of the process to ensure that things are able to move along and work properly. There are many downloadable guides you can access that puts your child in the driver’s seat as they follow the instructions.

Making crystals

The crystallised effect you can see on ice and in many rock formations can be made using a lot of home ingredients. Using epsom or rock salt, add to a cup of heated water. The amount of salt and water you use should be around the same. Place thin layers of salt water on lids (Pringle lids are good for this) and leave in the sun or overnight. You should then start to see crystals form, which will really excite your kids!

Use play dough or clay to make stop motion videos

Play dough is both creative and insightful to a child’s mind. You can grab your phone and make a stop motion video with the things your child makes with the moulding clay and look at the results together. It can be a really fun and engaging experience for your child and they get to look at how a video can be put together as well.
